Presenter: Michael Freeman, MedDr, PhD, MPH, FAAFS

Sherlock Holmes famously said, “Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.” But how to prove the truth? Dr. Freeman has approximately 200 published scientific papers, books, and book chapters on forensic applications of epidemiology and the scientific tenets of causation, crash-related injuries and death, chronic pain mechanisms, regenerative joint therapy utilizing stem cell therapy, and more. He has served in US and international courts as an expert in a variety of fields, including injury and death litigation, product liability, toxic tort litigation, tobacco litigation, medical negligence, as well as both a prosecution and defense expert in a number of homicide cases. And he lives in Oregon.

Since the advent of synchronized audio, reporters have grappled with sound recording issues. From audio that sounds like it was recorded in a toilet to blank air when you really needed that backup, this session will give you the basics on recording onto your computer microphones, PA systems or your videographer. And since it’s Mike Miller on stage, you’re sure to walk away with some new tricks in your bag.

With the recent reporting of just how perilous the Cascade subduction zone is, the question of “the big one” is no long “if” but “when.” Some of us are well on our way to being earthquake-prepared and others are just getting started. Let’s learn how to prepare individually and with our neighbors to become earthquake-ready. With a plan comes peace of mind.

Mike returns for a SECOND session which is a frank and in-your-face assessment of the current state of freelance reporting. Topics will include best practices, proofing techniques, and utilizing your software to help minimize errors. Mike will share his list of preferred audio devices so you can improve your own reporting kit. Bring your sense of humor and prepare to be educated, shocked, amused, and possibly offended when “Depoman” takes the stage.
